Swann Auction Galleries’ Fine Photographs & Photobooks sale, which took place on December 11, was a real highlight this week.
Featuring some of the most haunting, funny, frightening and frighteningly beautiful photographs taken during 20th century; Wall Street, New York by Paul Strand and a San Francisco Police Department album containing over 720 mug shots particularly stood out.
Documenting the end of existentialism and the emergence of celebrity culture, the auction catalogue spanned decades and featured portraiture, landscape, the nude, semi nude and fully clothed.
Although photography pertains to documentary – to notions of truth – the overall effect was one of distortion and transformation. It was amazing to see so many exciting images auction over a single afternoon.
Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles we also have a great many art and photography collectibles in stock.
