The relationship between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII has to be one of the most romantic love stories of all time.
Call me soppy, but it would have to be a pretty special lady to make me give up my throne.
Following his abdication of the throne in 1936, Edward delivered an apologetic speech to the entire nation, who were waiting for an explanation as to why he had turned his back on Great Britain.
“You all know the reasons which have impelled me to renounce the throne. But I want you to understand that in making up my mind I did not forget the country or the empire, which, as Prince of Wales and lately as King, I have for twenty-five years tried to serve,” he explained.
The speech was delivered with genuine regret and even the most cold-hearted members of the British public could have forgiven the poor, love-struck King for his actions.
PFC Auctions will feature Edward’s personal LP copy of the speech as part of its upcoming auction. I can only imagine how many times the King would have played that record, convincing himself that marrying Wallis was the right decision to make.
An extraordinary piece of royal memorabilia.
